Study Indicates NEM Reduces Pain from Osteoarthritis in Knee and Hip

JC1-NEM30-2If you are among the nearly 20 percent of adults in the U.S. who suffer from knee and hip osteoarthritis, a new study may provide you a treatment option. A recent study in Germany supports the claim that Natural Eggshell Matrix (NEM) can reduce osteoarthritis pain in the knee and hip. NEM is a unique, all-natural egg protein matrix found between the egg albumin and the eggshell.

The 2-month open-label study was conducted between March and July 2012 at six different clinical sites throughout Germany to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of NEM for the relief of the pain and discomfort associated with osteoarthritis of the knee and/or hip. The study included 44 subjects, 27 females and 17 males between the ages of 32 and 95, who had moderate, persistent osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, ankle, knee and hip, or knee and ankle. All of the subjects completed baseline evaluations and were evaluated again at 10, 30, and 60 days using a short-form questionnaire. They were given 500 mg of NEM daily for the duration of the study.

The study subjects reported significant treatment response from NEM supplementation. At 10 days, nearly a quarter of the subjects experienced a 30 percent improvement in pain-related questions and almost 30 percent experienced a 50 percent improvement in pain-related questions by the end of the study. More than 59 percent of the subjects rated the efficacy of NEM as either good or very good after 60 days. Similarly, physicians rated the treatment effective in subjects with more than 75 percent having moderate or significant improvement from baseline after 60 days. These results correspond to the results of other clinical studies of NEM.

Other than potential reactions due to egg allergies, there have been no side effects identified in any trial from consuming NEM. Eighty-six percent of study subjects rated the tolerability as good or very good.
