Fight Oxidative Stress with Antioxidants

SS3-SS100-2Antioxidants have been receiving a lot of press and hype, but what are antioxidants and how do they benefit you?

Oxidation is a normal process that occurs during normal cell function. But a small portion of cells become damaged during oxidation and become free radicals, which trigger a chain reaction that damages cells and cell DNA. Cells with damaged DNA grow and reproduce abnormally. This production of free radicals is called oxidative stress, which has been linked to the development of a range of diseases, including certain forms of cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cataracts, and macular degeneration. Free radicals may also contribute to the aging process. Free radicals are formed when you exercise, when your body converts food into energy, and from a variety of environmental sources, including cigarette smoke, air pollution, alcohol, and sunlight. Antioxidants help combat oxidative stress by either preventing the chain reaction of free radicals or stopping it after it has started. Continue reading

Osteoporosis and low bone density are real concerns as we age, as peak bone mass is reached between ages 20-30. After that, bone remodeling continues, but we lose more than we gain. NutraSense has a new calcium product, BONEhealth, featuring nature’s purest and most absorbable form of calcium – Eggshell Calcium (ESC®) with added vitamin D3 and magnesium.

Our bones not only provide structure, but they protect organs, anchor muscles and store calcium. Our bones are continuously changing and breaking down after we’ve reached peak mass. Several factors affect bone health and bone density, which include things like the amount of calcium in your diet, physical activity, tobacco and alcohol use which interfere with absorption; our gender & size, hormone levels, auto-immune diseases and eating disorders, and some medications. Several of these things can be controlled to help prevent bone loss, but some, like age, gender and frame-size cannot. Continue reading

JC4-GL-Ch90-2Winter is here. And, unfortunately, for many people that means winter joint pain, especially for those with osteoarthritis. The cold, damp weather affects joint fluid thickness and can increase joint stiffness and pain. Staying active, which helps keep joints lubricated, can also be harder in cold winter weather.

More than 400 million people are affected by joint and bone problems. Of people interviewed about chronic pain, two-thirds said they felt weather affected their pain. Most report being able to feel the changes even before the weather changed, often experiencing increased pain the day before a storm arrived. Continue reading

nutritional-supplements

Nutritional supplements have been in the cross-fire lately on every major news channel with both sides of the debate chiming in to whether or not these have a sound beneficial role in improving one’s health. Articles published in the Annals of Internal Medicine state ‘multivitamins are ineffective in preventing mortality or morbidity, claiming that they don’t help well-nourished adults” and that vitamins should not be used for chronic disease prevention.
